2013 Pet Hero Award Winner - ASPCA

Animal Welfare Education

The ASPCA is a name associated with education, protection, and positive change for animals throughout the United States. When Henry Bergh founded the organization in 1866, his belief was that all animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans, and must be protected under the law.

Today, the ASPCA is a national leader in the areas of anti-cruelty, community outreach and animal health services.  In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, the ASPCA helped rescue more than 300 pets from homes in New York and New Jersey that had been evacuated by their owners, dispatched ASPCA mobile wellness clinics to the hardest hit areas, and distributed nearly 40 tons of pet supplies to pet owners impacted by Sandy. Thanks to a generous donation from Rachael Ray, the ASPCA also provided sheltering for nearly 280 animals at its emergency boarding facility and reunited more than 100 pets with their families. As a result of the ASPCA’s combined response efforts, more than 30,000 local pets were assisted.

Education is a very high priority for this incredible organization. The ASPCA’s Community Outreach team works with communities across the country to help provide positive outcomes for animals at risk. In 2011, the ASPCA launched the Animal Relocation Initiative, which focuses on saving lives by helping organizations relocate animals from areas of oversupply to places where there are few, if any, similar pets available in shelters for adoption.

This year also marked the third anniversary of the ASPCA’s Cruelty Intervention Advocacy (CIA) program, which operates within the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement department. CIA proactively addresses animal hoarding as well as other situations created when pet owners cannot adequately care for their animals due to a lack of financial resources or other circumstances, such as domestic violence situations, medical or mental health challenges.  Since its inception, the CIA program has assisted nearly 4,000 animals in New York City.
